About 1 hour and 45 minutes from La Torre (95 km)

Long before people arrived in Elafonissi with cameras and sunhats, the place was sacred. The elders say a deer once lived here, white as moonlight. It wasn’t an ordinary creature. They called it “the spirit of the shore,” with eyes deep and quiet like the waters brushing the pink sand.

The deer would only appear to those with a pure heart, mainly children and those who had suffered deeply. One day, a girl named Margarita wandered there, chased by her fate. She had lost her family to the sea and had come to Elafonissi seeking silence, answers, or simply a soft embrace from nature.

As the sun was setting and the sea turned gold, the white deer appeared. It didn’t speak, just came close, touched her forehead with its nose, and a tear fell from its eye. That tear landed on the sand, and there, they say, the first pink seashell was born. Since then, Elafonissi’s sand has never been entirely white, it carries the hue of that tear: the color of memory, redemption, and love that endures.

Later, people came and battles were fought. Blood was spilled at Elafonissi, and the land remained silent. But the white deer was never lost. It lives in local stories, in the dreams of children who sleep beneath the cedars, and in every calm wave that touches your feet as you walk there.

If you stand still at the edge of the water, with your heart wide open, you may see it. You might hear the deer’s step on the sand, or the wind’s song that whispers:

“Here, the earth remembers. And beauty is always true, when it’s met with respect.”

What to Expect at Elafonissi

  • Pink-white sand and shallow, exotic waters that resemble a lagoon.
  • Ideal for families, children, and lovers of raw natural beauty.
  • A globally unique landscape, protected under the Natura 2000 environmental program.
  • Limited sunbeds and a small canteen with basic snacks, soft drinks, and water.
  • No beach bars, music, or luxury facilities, the experience is purely natural.

How to Get There

  • From La Torre, the drive is about 1 hour and 45 minutes. At the end of the road, you’ll find a parking area, followed by a 5–10-minute walk to the beach.
  • Bring an umbrella, water, a hat, and sunscreen—especially if you plan to stay in the quieter, unorganized section.
  • You can reach the small islet of Elafonissi by walking through its shallow, turquoise waters, an experience not to miss.
  • In summer (July & August), the beach fills up very early. For a shaded spot or sunbed, it’s best to arrive early in the morning.
  • Respect the environment, do not take shells, avoid stepping on dunes, and never leave trash behind.

STORIES

What they loved most about La Torre

This place is insane. Woke up to the sound of the port, had wine on the balcony at sunset, felt like a movie. Honestly didn’t want to leave

Couldn’t believe the view from the bedroom. Like waking up inside a painting. Coffee on the terrace hit different here.

Perfect mix of luxury and soul. The space is stunning but still feels personal. Can’t remember the last time I slept this well.

Amilie S.,

Denmark

Sunsets from the balcony, late-night walks in the old town, and that morning breeze—pure magic. Still thinking about it.

Marc D.,

I kept stopping just to take it all in. The design, the view, the calm. Easily the highlight of our Crete trip.

A real gem. The kind of place you almost don’t want to post about—just so it stays exactly as it is.
